Old Town is old. It’s one Chicago’s earliest neighborhoods and was originally the home to the very first German immigrants who settled in the area. This afternoon, we’re exploring the history of German Chicago and Oktoberfest via some of area’s most historic taverns.

Local beer and tavern historian, Liz Garibay, guides you on a thirst-free stroll that discusses the area’s bygone days and focuses on the history of the neighborhoods and each of the saloons you visit.

$20 ticket includes a fun history filled afternoon. Drinks on you. Tours meet and begin at Twin Anchors. All guest must have tickets.

Brew Canoe!

Brew+Canoe.jpg

Explore the Chicago River, like the (beer) Voyageurs of Chicago’s past.

Our vessel in exploring some of Chicago's beer stories - past and present - is a replica First Nations Voyageur Canoe. The 36 foot long canoe was primarily used between 1680 and 1870 during the fur trade in the Great Lakes region. Our conversation is led by historian, Liz Garibay, who will discuss Native American history, beer history, and Chicago River history.

Our journey takes us from Kayak Chicago’s North Avenue launch north to Metropolitan Brewing where we’ll stop for a beer or two. While we paddle back south we’ll chat a bit more about Chicago’s rivercentric beer and alcohol history. We conclude at Off Color Brewing’s Mousetrap for more brews.

Total paddle distance is approximately 6 miles. This is an active experience. You WILL be paddling so please be prepared for a decent amount of upper body exercise and the potential of being sore the next day.

$75 ticket price includes:

  • An awesome and extremely stable, Coast Guard approved replica historic canoe.

  • Professional guides to lead your paddle you - you paddle too!

  • History!

  • One beer at Metropolitan Brewing.

  • One beer at Off Color Brewing’s Mousetrap.

  • Philanthropy! This experience is in collaboration with the Chicago Brewseum.

The Chicago Flag's Tipsy History

The City’s flag exhibits important components of our city’s rich history and geography, and it can also teach us about Chicago’s drinking culture. Join us for a discussion on how booze and beer connect to those red stars and blue and white stripes. Learn the history and stories of the individual stars and the collective stripes and discover the important link between our city flag and Chicago’s long drinking culture. Of course, we’ll have a few beers to sample along the way.

In collaboration with the Driehaus Museum.
